Algal food processing by Stegastes nigricans, an herbivorous damselfish: differences between an undisturbed and a disturbed coral reef site (La Reunion, Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Lison De Loma, Thierry; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Naim, Odile; Fontaine, Marie France.
There has, as yet, been little study of nutrient disturbance and its consequences on the functional biology of primary consumers in coral reefs. The processing of epilithic algal communities by the damselfish Stegastes nigricans was investigated at La Reunion, at two sites of a fringing reef, oligotrophic for one and eutrophic for the other. Differences between sites were analyzed in quantifying organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen, and organic 'nutrients' (carbohydrate, lipid and protein) in the algal food, the digestive contents and the faeces of S. nigricans. In the disturbed site, algal turfs and digestive contents presented significantly higher organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen and organic nutrient values. Absorption efficiency of total...

Circulation around La Reunion and Mauritius islands in the south-western Indian Ocean: A modeling perspective ArchiMer
Pous, Stephane; Lazure, Pascal; Andre, Gael; Dumas, Franck; Halo, Issufo; Penven, Pierrick.
Circulation around both islands is dominated by westward propagating features The predominant time scale of variability of currents and SSH is 60 days There is local generation of eddies in the lee of the islands due to topography

Going micro: Analysing SAM multipliers for the dairy chain on Reunion Island AgEcon
D'Haese, Marijke F.C.; Lecomte, Philippe; Alary, Veronique; D'Haese, Luc; Schipper, Robert A..
This poster presents a study on the multiplier effects in the dairy chain on Reunion Island. This Indian Ocean island is one of the French overseas departments. However, it struggles with similar problems as the developing areas in its neighbourhood, high levels of unemployment especially being a major concern. The agricultural sector justifies the state support it receives by stressing its role in the creation of employment and economic activity. Our focus is on the dairy sector of the Island, which is relatively recent and highly organized. Local milk production has increased over the years and our aim is to calculate the economywide impact of this trend. We use a social accounting matrix with disaggregated accounts for the dairy sector to calculate the...

Influence of Freshwater Discharges on Biogeochemistry and Benthic Communities of a Coral Reef Ecosystem (La Réunion Island, Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Tedetti, Marc; Bigot, Lionel; Turquet, Jean; Guigue, Catherine; Ferretto, Nicolas; Goutx, Madeleine; Cuet, Pascale.
We investigated the influence of freshwater discharges on biogeochemistry and benthic communities of La Saline fringing reef, the largest coral reef system of La Réunion Island (France, Indian Ocean). Sampling was conducted in February–March 2012 along a land-ocean continuum, including rivers, groundwater, reef waters, and oceanic waters. Our results indicated the discharges of basalt groundwater (enriched in nitrates) in the southern part of the reef, and the discharges of sand groundwater and river waters (enriched in organic matter) in sites located northward. These discharges mainly impacted fore reef surface waters, while groundwater resurgences were more diffuse and not clearly detected in depth. We highlighted the relationship Si(OH)4/NO3– to...
